Pink eye: Keep a look out for these signs and symptoms
As we recognize Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, let's focus on a common issue that affects little ones. Conjunctivitis, or “pink eye,” can easily spread among children, teenagers, and adults. Continue reading to learn about the signs and symptoms of pink eye, explore treatment options, and discover prevention tips to keep your family healthy.
Pink eye occurs when the conjunctiva, a transparent membrane that lines the eye and eyelid, becomes inflamed. Symptoms include itchiness or irritation around the eyes, which may appear red, pink, or watery. There may also be discharge around the eyes and sensitivity to light.
Below are a few reasons why this happens and whether it’s contagious.
- Viruses and bacteria - Highly contagious.
- Allergic reaction - Not contagious.
- Foreign object/substance in the eye - Not contagious.
- Blocked tear duct (more common in newborns) - Less likely to be contagious.
Treating pink eye
- If you suspect someone in your household has pink eye, call your PCP to schedule a visit. You may even be able to schedule a virtual visit with your doctor’s office.
- Prescription eye drops can help ease symptoms and assist in recovery.
- Stop wearing contact lenses until the infection has passed.
Prevention tips
Pink eye can be highly contagious if it’s caused by a virus or bacteria. That’s because it will spread through the discharge or liquid from an infected eye. Follow these tips to prevent pink eye and stop its spread:
- Wash hands thoroughly throughout the day
- Avoid touching eyes
- Clean and change contacts regularly
- Don’t share eye cosmetics or personal care items
- Use clean towels
- Wash clothes daily and do not share them
- Change pillowcases often
Redness or pain in the eye can be a sign of more serious infections. When in doubt, contact your primary care provider (PCP) or visit urgent care.
Thankfully, pink eye is a common childhood ailment that can be prevented and treated. Maintaining good hygiene practices and promptly addressing signs of a potential pink eye infection can ensure your family's eyes stay healthy and clear.
