Insider News: Ways to safely enjoy July 4th weekend

Coronavirus cases are on the rise in parts of the country, making it more important than ever to stay safe during the holiday weekend. We're sharing some tips for how to reduce your risk and a few fun alternatives to crowded parades and fireworks shows.

How to celebrate July 4th safely during the coronavirus pandemic from NPR

Going into the holiday weekend, NPR correspondent Allison Aubrey discusses the importance of mask wearing and highlights new analysis from the CDC on the connection between chronic conditions and COVID-19 risk. While age does increase risk, people with diabetes, obesity, heart disease, lung disease, and other chronic conditions are reportedly 6 times more likely to be hospitalized and 12 times more likely to die from the virus. This is true even for young people.

Short-term advice for July 4th celebrations includes:

  • Wear a mask
  • Outdoors is better than indoors
  • Keep gatherings to small groups and avoid crowds
  • Ask guests to "BYO everything"

Aubrey also reminds listeners that most states have a dashboard to help people understand the spread and danger level in their area. You can find Massachusetts' daily dashboard here at mass.gov.


If you're looking for alternatives to traditional Fourth of July celebrations, The New York Times has some activities you can participate in from the safety of your home or backyard. Some of the suggestions include:

  • Watch fireworks on TV or online (Boston Pops Orchestra will pay tribute to frontline workers on Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Radio and Boston’s WHDH-TV at 8 p.m.)
  • Virtually tour national parks and landmarks
  • Watch a live recording of "Hamilton," the Broadway musical, on Disney+
  • Celebrate with festive recipes like backyard barbecue or red white and blue desserts
  • Have a picnic in the park or other small outdoor gathering
  • Play games outside with household members or a small group of friends
